26 Best Rooftop Bars In Athens For Sips & Views
Searching for the best rooftop bars in Athens usually means one thing: you’re dying for that perfect moment in Athens. Believe me, I know. It’s a cocktail in hand, the Acropolis glowing at sunset, and a view that makes you stop mid-sip.
Okay, but there is a problem that can kill that moment instantly. Not every rooftop is worth the hype (or the price tag). Some are packed with tourists, while others are hidden gems only known by the locals. There are plenty of rooftop bars in Athens; the key is just knowing which ones are actually worth your time.
I’ve rooftop-hopped my way across Athens plenty of times, and if you only have time for a few, my personal musts are Stork, Prasini Tenta (not a rooftop, but the view is unreal), Anglais, and Retire. Keep reading because I’ll help you sort the unforgettable spots from the ones you need to skip so you can spend less time searching and more time toasting Athens from above.
If you plan to share your rooftop view on Instagram, I have the perfect Athens captions and Greece captions you can copy for your post. Yamas!

Best Rooftop Bars in Athens (Why They’re a Must)
Athens is already a city that easily stimulates all your senses. From the historical sites you see, the light scent of orange blossoms at night, church bells echoing from hidden courtyards, and warm pita cradling your gyro meat. Now we can turn it up a notch and add a glass of wine or a spritz in your hand, and you’ll see why rooftop bars aren’t just a night out here. Rooftop bars in Athens are something you can’t skip during your visit.
Yes, getting lost in Plaka or browsing the flea markets in Monasteraki are really cool, but nothing compares to watching the Acropolis light up at night. Athens rooftops are your front-row seats to experience the drama where democracy was born. Arrive early to catch fiery sunsets and late-night beats.
I’m going to be really honest here: not all rooftops are created equal. Some will leave you elbowing for space with a dozen selfie sticks, while others are so low-key you’ll wonder if you stumbled upon a secret. I’ve spent plenty of evenings testing them out (it was a tough job) to figure out which ones are actually worth your time.
If you’re wondering is Athens worth visiting, after visiting these rooftops, you will understand why one rooftop drink often turns into three and why.

A for Athens

Okay, I’m going to be very blunt with you. This isn’t one of my personal favorite rooftops since it leans on the pretty touristy side. You’ve probably seen those popular Instagram photos of Monastiraki Square taken from here.
So if it is your first time in Athens, the view of the Acropolis here is incredible. The cocktail list may shock you a bit. One of my favorites is the Realism, a gin-based drink (you know gin is my jam) mixed with tomato vermouth and Ratatouille ketchup. Yeah, I know it sounds a bit weird, but somehow it works.
The space is on the smaller side, so I highly recommend making a reservation if you plan to visit on a summer evening.

Visiting Athens Rooftop Bars Tips
Do You Need Reservations?
For some rooftops, you absolutely do, especially in the summer, to catch a sunset. Spots will fill up fast. Just to be safe, make them. I’ve walked into a rooftop bar when it wasn’t crowded during lunch hours, but because I didn’t have a reservation, I couldn’t sit at a table closest to the edge. For the hidden gems, walk-ins are usually fine, but for weekends, they can still be tricky.
Average Prices (Cocktails, Beer, Wine)
Expect cocktails in Athens rooftops to run anywhere from €10–18, depending on how fancy the rooftop menu is. Beers usually cost €5–7, and wine by the glass averages €6–10. A simple night with a drink or two can feel affordable, but if you add food or go for signature cocktails, plan for €30–50 per person.
Rooftops Open Year Round (Winter Options)
Yes, Athens rooftops don’t shut down just because it’s a little chilly. Many have heated terraces, glass covers, throw blankets on the chairs, or indoor lounges that still offer views. It’s a totally different vibe in winter. Expect fewer crowds and twinkly lights.
Accessibility – Elevators vs. Stairs
Most hotel rooftops have elevators, so getting can be easy breezy. Some of the smaller, funkier rooftops might have a few stairs to climb to reach the rooftop bar. If accessibility is important, always double-check with the venue before heading out.
Dress Codes & Etiquette
Athens rooftop bars are pretty relaxed, but people do like to look nice. At the chic bars, I suggest you put in some effort. Smart casual will always work, so ditch the flip-flops and beachwear for your escape to the Greek islands.
🚢 Pro tip: Grab your ferry tickets through Ferryhopper. It’s what the locals (and impatient travelers like me) use to island hop.

FAQs About Athens Rooftop Bars
Do I need to book in advance?
Yes, for the famous Acropolis-view rooftops. For hidden gems, walk-ins often work. However, one of the best times to visit Athens is in the summer. To ensure you get the closest table to the Acropolis during tourist season, book!
Are rooftop bars in Athens open in winter?
Yes. Many remain open year-round, with heaters, blankets, or indoor lounges to keep you comfortable. If you plan on visiting during this time, peek at my winter in Athens guide to give you more deets.
What’s the average cost of drinks?
Cocktails average €10–18, beer usually goes for €5–7, and wine €6–10. For some tips on budgeting your visit, check out my full post on “Is Athens expensive?”
Are kids allowed at rooftop bars?
Some hotel rooftops welcome families during the day. Evenings are usually more of an adult-only environment.
Which rooftop is best for Instagram photos?
A for Athens or 360 for classic Acropolis shots. For something new to bring to the table, go to Stork or The Zillers.
If I only have one night in Athens, which rooftop should I choose?
My pick: Stork for the balance of views, style, and atmosphere. The food is a bonus as well.
And if you’re wondering about the safety for a rooftop night out in the city, I have a post on “Is Athens safe?” to put your mind at ease.
But, if you can spare an extra day, check my Athens 2 day itinerary.

Greece Travel Planning Guide
🚑 Should I buy Greece travel insurance?
Yes, absolutely. Travel delays, missed ferries, lost luggage, and surprise medical issues happen. If you’re visiting from abroad, travel insurance is one of those things you hope you never need, but you’ll be glad you have travel insurance if something goes wrong.
💧 Can you drink the water in Greece?
Sometimes yes, sometimes no. In Athens and many mainland areas, tap water is generally safe. On some islands, though, the water may be desalinated or not taste great, so many travelers stick to bottled water.
🚗 Is it safe to rent a car in Greece?
Yes, and it can make your trip much easier if you plan to explore outside Athens. Just expect narrow roads, tight parking, and a little driving chaos now and then. I book my rentals through Discover Cars.
📱 Will my phone work in Greece?
Maybe, depends on your plan. Some international plans work fine, while others come with roaming fees that are just rude. For maps, bookings, and everyday travel, Airalo’s eSIM is worth it.
🏨 What’s the best way to book accommodations in Greece?
For hotels, I usually check Expedia and Booking.com first. If you would like more space, VRBO is a good option too. In summer, book early because the best spots go quickly.
✈️ What’s the best site to book flights to Greece?
I like using Skyscanner to compare flight prices to Greece. It’s especially helpful if your dates are flexible or you’re deciding whether to fly into Athens or straight to an island.
⛴️ Should I book ferries in advance in Greece?
Yes, especially in summer, I use Ferryhopper. Popular ferry routes can fill up quickly, especially for islands like Santorini, Mykonos, Paros, and Naxos. Missing your ferry is not the kind of Greek adventure you want.
🎫 Do I need a visa for Greece?
Probably not for a short trip, but always check first. Many travelers, including US passport holders, can stay in Greece for up to 90 days without a visa. For longer stays or remote work plans, check the rules ahead of time. Check visa requirements here.
